Outdoor Rangehoods for Alfresco Kitchens
An outdoor rangehood is designed to remove smoke, heat and airborne grease from your alfresco kitchen. It improves airflow, reduces smoke build-up and creates a more comfortable cooking and entertaining environment.
Rangehoods are especially important in covered outdoor areas where ventilation needs to be carefully managed.
What Is an Outdoor Rangehood?
An outdoor rangehood is a ventilation system installed above a BBQ or outdoor cooktop that removes smoke, heat, grease, and cooking fumes produced during high-temperature BBQ cooking. Unlike indoor rangehoods, alfresco rangehoods are semi-commercial units designed to handle the higher heat output and harsher conditions of outdoor environments.
To effectively manage BBQ smoke and grease, outdoor rangehoods typically feature dual motors with a minimum extraction rate of 2000m³ per hour, delivering the powerful airflow needed to keep outdoor kitchens cleaner, clearer, and more comfortable while cooking.
Types of rangehoods
There are several types of outdoor rangehoods, and the right option depends on your kitchen layout and structure.
Wall Mounted Rangehoods
Wall mounted rangehoods are installed directly onto a wall above the BBQ or cooktop. They are commonly used in outdoor kitchens positioned against a boundary wall or rear alfresco wall.
Island Rangehoods
Island rangehoods are suspended from the ceiling above a cooking appliance located in a central island bench. They are designed for open-plan outdoor kitchen layouts.
Canopy Rangehoods
Canopy rangehoods feature a visible hood structure and are often chosen for strong extraction performance in covered alfresco areas.
Compliance
When installing an alfresco rangehood, certain safety and compliance requirements should be followed to ensure safe operation and effective ventilation in outdoor kitchen environments.
- Minimum Mounting Height: Alfresco rangehoods should be installed at least 1200mm above the cooking surface to meet compliance requirements and ensure safe operation when used with BBQ appliances.
- Flame Failure Requirement (Enclosed Areas): In enclosed outdoor kitchen spaces, the BBQ must be fitted with a flame failure safety device when used in conjunction with an alfresco rangehood to meet safety and compliance standards.
